Skeleton of a Volkswagen Kombi van sits at the Fisheries Training Institute in Entebbe, Uganda, July 11, 2012. The Uganda Government Ministry of Animal Resources (as it was called in the 1970s) supplied VW Kombi vans to the Fisheries Training Institute and the Veterinary Training Institute as part of their staff fleet. The VW cars, made in West Germany, were a regular sight on Uganda's roads during the eight year rule of President Idi Amin. In 1977, the Idi Amin government imported fleets of Japanese-made Honda Civic and Honda Accord for its civil servants. The new VW Passat cars were imported in the 1980s (many to be used by the intelligence service of the second Milton Obote government, NASA) but by then the shift from European vehicles to Japanese vehicles had started and today, well over 90 percent of all vehicles on Ugandan roads are made in Japan.
